LaTeX and Word

Wow, what can I say? After nearly 2 years using almost exclusively LaTeX for Word Processing, and having not touched Word since Word 1997, I must admit: there’s no love lost.

LaTeX is beautiful. Word is abysmal. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Word per se, it’s simply that I don’t understand it. And I don’t think I ever did.

LaTeX has beautiful typesetting, documents have structure. Changing how it looks just involves downloading a template. And I know why it’s doing what it’s doing.

Word, on the other hand, appears to randomly move stuff around the page on me. Or around the document. It takes ages to load. Page numbers don’t necessarily correspond to reality. You still have to compile the Table Of Contents. And how the hell do you move stuff around the page?!

So for now I work in Openoffice and save in Word 🙂 And I have a deeper of appreciation of my mother complaining about computers!

Note: At some point, expect this to lead to another rant about good UI design…
